Covering an area of 96,800 square kilometers, the Chang-Zhu-Tan City Cluster is an area centered around Changsha, Zhuzhou, and Xiangtan, including the adjacent cities of Yueyang, Changde, Yiyang, Hengyang and Loudi, with a total population of 41.05 million (2014). The three cities of Changsha, Zhuzhou and Xiangtan, the core of this cluster, are located along the Xiangjiang River in the shape of the Chinese character "品". It is only half an hour drive from one city to another within the three. The three cities cover an area of 28,000 square kilometers and have a population of 13.736 million. In 2014, the GDP of these cities amounted to 1155.59 billion yuan, taking up 42.7% of the total of Hunan province. Changsha, Zhuzhou and Xiangtan have always been places essential to the development of Hunan.
